[愚痴] My well-meaning DM got ignored

I am a Japanese person and I live in Japan.

I used to live abroad for a few years for university and had some friends/flatmates in university dormitory back then. I wasn’t really close to most of them since I was only there for a short time and didn’t have much in common with them.

Recently I heard from a mutual friend that one of the local guys I lived with got his PhD at a well-known uni in the UK. Even though we weren’t that close and barely kept in touch (we were basically just flatmates and were in the same friend group (kind of)), I thought it’d be nice to congratulate him since I know getting a PhD is quite demanding. So I sent him a message like: “I heard from XX (mutual friend’s name) that you got a PhD! Congrats!”

But he hasn’t even opened my DM, and instead he’s posting on his story!

So my question is: is it normal to ignore old friends even when they mean well?

Are you sure he just hasn't seen your message by accident? I do have opportunities to reconnect with some of my older friends and colleagues after a couple of years of not talking, but most of them do reply! (It does sometimes take them a couple of days or weeks to notice my message in the first place though)

I’m not sure but it might be possible though unlikely that it’s because of insta feature that made my message go though or something. Yes based on my experience some of them do reply and some don’t it’s completely fine coz we can’t keep in touch with everyone.. anyways thanks for listening to me. I try not to take it too personally

I see. It's a little unfortunate but like you said, don't take it too personally and just move on. There are more important friends out there :)

I don’t think it is unusual. People get busy in their lives especially as they get older and may not be interested in staying in touch with old friends.
